“American” - Spook Houses
New Jersey indie-rock outfit Spook Houses roll out their new song “American” carelessly: the phlegmatic opening crawl, that lo-fi production that lends credence to their parent’s basement-rock-session appearance, and a burst of breakneck aggression are all desperate additions, a buffet of teenage elements that clash and collide just as well as they stumble over each other in buffoonery. Everything from the song’s lyrics—“Right now I don’t feel like it/ I’m drunk and I feel like shit” is placed at the edge of the lethargic introduction—to the release date (July 4th) reeks of goofiness; and it’s perhaps due to that level of consistency and heartfelt delivery that makes Spook Houses such a convincing package.
